Cuts Like a Knife Lyrics

Drivin' home this evening
I coulda sworn we had it all worked out
You had this boy believin'
Way beyond the shadow of a doubt, yeah
Well I heard it on the street
I heard you mighta found somebody new, yeah
Well who is he baby, who is he
And tell me what he means to you, oh yeah
I took it all for granted
But how was I to know
That you'd be letting go
Now it cuts like a knife
But it feels so right
Yeah, it cuts like a knife
Oh, but it feels so right
There's times I've been mistaken
There's times I thought I'd been misunderstood, ooo yeah
So wait a minute darlin'
Can't you see we did the best we could, ooo we could
Wouldn't be the first time
That things have gone astray
Now you've thrown it all away
Now it cuts like a knife
Yeah but it feels so right
Oh it cuts like a knife
Yeah but it feels so right
Oh it's cut like a knife
But it feels so right, baby
Oh it cuts like a knife, yeah
I took it all for granted
But how was I to know
That you'd be letting go
Now it cuts like a knife
Yeah but it feels so right, mmm
Now it cuts like a knife
Yeah, but it feels so right
Yeah
Oh it cuts like a knife
Oh oh
But it feels so right, baby
Oh yeah
It cuts like a knife
Now give it to me now
Oh yeah, come on boys, awh
Cuts like a knife, yeah yeah yeah
Na, it cuts like a knife now
It feels so right, yeah yeah
It feels so right, baby
Na na yeah, it feels so right
And it cuts like a knife

Released in May 1983, it became the second single from his third studio album of the same name as the song, "Cuts Like a Knife". This song has appeared on every Byan Adams compilation album except "The Best of Me".

song title

Song Title

In an interview with Vancouver's Georgia Straight newspaper in 1988, Bryan Adams explained how he and Jim Vallance came up with the song's title, and I quote "I think I'm one of the best mumblers in the world, I can mutter some of the best lyrics , but putting them together is another story. I think that's where Jim is really good - he can put a story together. It's just nice to have the tape rolling while you're recording me.
The best example was when we wrote "Cuts Like A Knife ", which was literally a murmur. We looked at each other, rolled the tape backwards and it sounded like "Cuts Like A Knife", so we started singing it"
.

classification

Classification and certification

The song managed to rank, in different charts, in the following positions: sixth place on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart, fifteenth place on the Billboard Hot 100; twelfth on the Canadian Singles Chart, having stayed in the top twenty for seven weeks;
"Cuts Like a Knife" became Bryan Adams' most successful single to date in his native Canada.

critics opinion

Critics' opinion

Cash Box characterized the song as a "tough song to end a relationship", and also praised Bryan Adams strong and husky vocals. For Stewart Mason of Allmusic, it is "More anthemic rock than the previous ballad hit, "Straight from the Heart", "Cuts Like a Knife" breaks absolutely no new ground lyrically or musically, but as with her previous hit , Adams here proves his worth as a singer-songwriter.”

video clip

Presentation video clip

Directed by Irish director Steve Barron, the music video for "Cuts Like a Knife" was filmed in Hollywood inside an indoor, empty swimming pool. The pool has been drained and has been out of use for several years.
The music video for "Cuts Like a Knife" was one of the most popular in 1983 and was, during the same year, in heavy rotation on MTV.
The woman in the video is a Penthouse magazine model named Raquel Pena. She later stated that she was chosen during the audition because "Steve Barron wanted someone with very long legs and I wore a black bathing suit that he liked. I wore the same pantsuit in the video. It was so low budget!"

curiosities

Curiosities

Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, for a while, improvised on the chord progression. Bryan Adams sang "Cuts Like a Knife" several times. Jim Vallance, for his part, retorted "But it feels so right. Adams and I drew on that tradition for the choruses of 'Cuts Like A Knife'".
